The study area extends over the Skagerrak, which is a dynamic marine area connecting the North Sea to the Kattegat and the Baltic Sea. Its waters are shaped by a mix of salty North Sea water and fresher Baltic outflow, creating layers that affect nutrient movement. Tides are weak but seasonal winds cause stronger layering in summer and more mixing in winter. The Norwegian Coastal Current which flows along the coast of Norway, transports nutrients, that support the rich marine ecosystem.

The area hosts a wide range of human activities, including petroleum extraction, fisheries, maritime transportation, offshore wind development, and the early-stage development of offshore aquaculture. The area also includes zones officially recognised for their ecological importance, while being strategically important for defence activities.
